Sania crashes out of doubles semifinals

NEW DELHI: Sania Mirza’s good run in the doubles came to a crashing end with the Indian teen and her American partner Bethanie Mattek suffering a straight set defeat at the hands of fourth seeded Italian-Argentine duo of Maria Elena Camerin and Gisela Dulko in the semifinals of the 600,000 dollar Stanford Classic.

The Camerin-Dulko pair quelled challenge from their Indo-American opponents and beat them 6-4, 6-3 to breeze into the finals. Sania, earlier, had crashed out of the singles event in the first round.

Sania and Bethanie were matching their rivals shot for shot but suddenly they lost momentum and the fight went in vain as Camerin and Dulko pocketed the first set, according to information received in New Delhi.

Occasional flashes notwithstanding, Sania and Bethanie looked but jaded in the second set. They needed to win it to force a decider but the sense of urgency was somehow lacking and they rather surprisingly seemed to have read the writing on the wall and gave up without a fight.

Sania has had a poor second full season in the WTA Tour but her doubles show has been quite satisfactory and the Hyderabadi rose to a career high 31 in WTA Rankings.

The Indo-US pair will face a tough opposition in the form of Sania’s Fed Cup partner Shikha and Jelena, who caused a major upset by beating the top seed Japanese-Slovak duo of Ai Sugiyama Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-4 in their first round match.

Sania, who crashed out of the singles event in the first round losing in straight sets to 98th ranked Russian Vasilisa Bardina, continued with her good doubles form in the WTA Tier II hardcourt event.

Sania and Bethanie were hardly tested by Alla and Tetiana, who struggled to match up to the aggressive Indo-US duo. The first set proved to be a cakewalk for Sania and Bethanie as they dropped only one game to wrest the initiative.

The second set followed almost the similar pattern and Alla and Tetiana surrendered without puttig up a decent fight in the match.

Sania-Marta pair loses in final of Cincinnati Open

MASON: Sania Mirza and her Polish partner Marta Domachowska failed to raise their game at crucial junctures as they went down 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 to the top seed Italian-Argentine pair of Maria Elena Camerin and Gisela Dulko in the women’s doubles final of the 175,000 dollar Cincinnati Open.

The Indo-Polish pair, seeded third in the event, only had their inconsistency and poor serve to blame for the loss. Sania and Marta were leading 2-0 in the first set but committed three double faults after that to allow their opponents to make a comeback. The top seeds took full advantage of the follies committed by Sania-Marta and clinched the opener in 42 minutes.

The third seeds than made a remarkable recovery in the second set after losing the opening game and won four consecutive games to equalise in just over half an hour. The hard hitting Indo-Polish duo caught their rivals off guard as they hit 27 winners — apart from breaking them four times — to take the match into the third set.

The decider was a test of nerves but Sania and Marta failed miserably on this count as they committed five double faults and lost five consecutive games to lose the championship to the top seeds, who it seemed saved their best for the last to claim their maiden title together.

However, despite being inconsistent, Sania and Marta were praised by their opponents for their aggressive play by the winners. ”We were a little surprised at how hard they were hitting the ball. None of the teams we played before in this tournament hit it that hard. We were also surprised at how solid they were from the baseline and the net too. It was really tough,” Camerin said in the post-match press conference about the match.

Mason (Ohio): Sania Mirza gave a tough fight to top seed Patty Schnyder before going down against the Swiss player in the rain-delayed quarterfinal showdown of the $175,000 Cincinnati Open tennis tournament.

The ninth seed Indian, who was playing her first quarterfinal of the season, made Schnyder to toil for the 6-7 (7/9), 5-7 victory in the tie which was interrupted twice. The 19-year-old Sania will now concentrate on her doubles semifinals, where she is partnering Poland’s Marta Domachowska, as the third seeds at the Tier III event.

Schnyder, who is yet to lose a set in the tournament, will be up against fourth seed Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in the semi-final en route to winning her 10th title. Srebotnik overwhelmed sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-2, 6-1, to reach her first semi-final of the year. Schnyder has won both previous meetings between the two, including one at Miami earlier this year. In the other last eight stage match, Serena Williams advanced to semifinal with a 6-2, 6-2 win over fellow American Amy Frazier.

Williams, who had to wait out the completion of Schnyder-Mirza duel before she got on court in the final match of the evening, made a short work of Frazier despite coming after a long injury lay-off since the Australian Open because of a nagging left knee injury. The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who has slipped to 139th rank in the world, has been impressive on her return and has not dropped a set while dropping just 12 games in three matches. She will face unseeded Russian Vera Zvonarave, a former top 10 player, in the semifinal.

Cincinnati, Ohio: Sania Mirza beat Finland’s Emma Laine 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 in the second round to set up a quarter-final clash with top seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the $175,000 Cincinnati Open here.

Sania won the see-saw battle against the Fin, who made a dramatic comeback after being a set down to blank the Indian in the second but eventually ran out of steam against the ninth seed.

The Indian teen made a confident start helped, to some extent, by the mistakes committed by her opponent who double faulted four times in the first set itself. Sania smashed 27 winners compared to the 12 by Emma to run away with the opener.

After a dominant start, Sania was expected to walk away with the match in the second set but that was not to be and Emma gave the Indian a shock by raising her game. The Fin held on to her serve and broke the Indian once, who didn’t help her cause by committing two double faults, before winning the set and taking the match into a decider.

Shaken by the second set beating, the ninth seed was at her aggressive best in the third as she hammered in three aces and 29 winners — in addition to breaking Emma thrice — to seal the match in her favour after one and a half hour.

The win has set her up against top seed Schnyder who, after a scrappy start, has picked up her game well.

Among the other Indians in the fray, Shikha Uberoi and her Canadian partner Maureen Drake were beaten 6-0, 1-6, 3-6 in the doubles second round by top seeds Maria Elena of Italy and Argentine Gisela Dulko.

Shikha and Maureen made a solid start but the unseeded duo could not maintain the tempo against the top seeds, who lived up to their billing by coming back after being a set down to oust the Indo-Canadian pair from the tournament.
